How to find out if you are low on B12?

To test your B12 levels you can give either blood or urine. Tests will look at your overall vitamin B12, Methylmalonic acid (MMA), homocysteine and holoTC (holotranscobalamin).

Investigation suggests that MMA and holoTC tests are more accurate at reading low vitamin B12 levels than the overall vitamin B12 test. This is because they test active levels of vitamin B12. This provides doctors with a more accurate reading for diagnosis.

In fact, a regular MCV blood test might catch macrocytic anemia, but it often does not surface for close to two years after a vitamin B12 deficiency starts. This is commonly the only time that most doctors will request an MMA test, however abnormal MCV results are rare and only apparent for severe deficiency. In less than severe cases, the vitamin B12 level can appear normal in testing even though a serious vitamin B12 deficiency exists. This is why MMA tests are preferred when B12 deficiency signs and symptoms appear.
