Benzyl Alcohol
Contraindications for Benzyl Alcohol
This preparation is not advised in patients who are sensitive to cobalt and/or vitamin B12. Because this product contains benzyl alcohol, it should not be used in newborns or in people who are sensitive to benzyl alcohol.
Use in health care
Benzyl alcohol is used as a bacteriostatic preservative at low concentration in intravenous medications, cosmetics, and topical drugs.
Benzyl alcohol is an ingredient used in the manufacture of soaps, topical creams, skin lotions, shampoos, and facial cleansers and is popular due to its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It is a common ingredient in a variety of household products.
Safety
Sensitization to benzyl alcohol occurs very rarely, mainly in patients with stasis dermatitis.
It is not considered to be a carcinogen, and no data are available regarding teratogenic or reproductive effects.
Benzyl alcohol has low acute toxicity with an LD50 of 1.2 g/kg in rats.
It oxidizes rapidly in healthy individuals to benzoic acid, conjugated with glycine in the liver, and excreted as hippuric acid.
Very high concentrations can result in toxic effects including respiratory failure, vasodilation, hypotension, convulsions, and paralysis.
Benzyl alcohol is toxic to newborns and is associated with the gasping syndrome.
Disodium edetate (minimal amount in March B12 injection)
Disodium edetate is used in B12 injections as a chelating agent to help stabilize the formulation and enhance the absorption of trace minerals like zinc, manganese, and copper, which are often included alongside vitamin B12 for supplementation. This combination supports nutritional needs especially during periods of high demand.
Contraindications for Disodium edetate
Disodium edetate information as used in pharmaceutical as additive.
*Contraindications are for higher amounts when used as an IV treatment and not specifically for small amounts used as an ingredient in vitamin B12 solution. However, it's always advisable to read and consult with your doctor.
• People allergic to the drug should not use it
Sodium Chloride
Contraindications for Sodium Chloride
Almost no issue at such small quantities used as dilution fluid, unless an allergic reaction occurs.
Allergies
Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to sodium chloride or any other medicines. Tell your health care professional if you have any other types of allergies.
Appropriate studies have not been performed on the relationship of age to the effects of sodium chloride injection in the pediatric population. Safety and efficacy have not been established.
Vitamin B12 Warnings
Patients who have early Leber's disease (LHON) a hereditary disease that causes optic nerve atrophy have been found to suffer severe and swift optic atrophy when treated with vitamin B12.
Fatal hypokalemia may occur when severe megaloblastic anemia is treated intensively with vitamin B12, as a result of increased erythrocyte potassium requirements.
Injecting help
Always follow the advice of your medical professional. If you decide to undertake self-injection, first consult a nurse practitioner or doctor to learn the proper method of identifying and cleaning the injection site, administration and how-to properly open and clean a vial.
