Why Vitamin B12 Cyanocobalamin is Vegan

How is Vitamin B12 Cyanocobalamin Made?”

How is Vitamin B12 Cyanocobalamin Made?Vitamin B12 cyanocobalamin supplements are made without using animal produced ingredients, where as natural vitamin B12’s are made using anaerobic microorganisms (bacteria) that are common inside the gastrointestinal tract of animals.

Vitamin B12 cyanocobalamin supplements are made by using bacteria grown on a cobalt-enriched medium in a laboratory, producing vitamin B12 as natural as found in dairy, eggs, and meats. The lab bacteria makes vitamin B12 using the same bacteria found naturally in animals but not derived from animals. The process produces vitamin B12 with the exact same chemical structure produced by animals without using animal products. Vitamin B12 Cyanocobalamin is the most stable form of vitamin B12.

Interestingly, vitamin B12 is the largest known biomolecule and the only nutrient that has a stable carbon-metal bond. One molecule of cobalt lies at the center of each B12 molecule. Isolated B12 is a crystalline compound displaying a bright red color due the presence of cobalt.

If you want to get nerdy, and apparently I do, the empirical formula for vitamin B12 is C61-64H84-90N14O13-14PCo, and he IUPAC name is α-(5, 6- dimethyl benzimidazole) cobomidcyanide. The final structure for vitamin B12 was discovered by Dorothy Hodgkin for which she won the Nobel Prize in 1964.

How the Body Uses Vitamin B12 Cyanocobalamin

To allow the body to assimilate the useful form of vitamin B12, the body must first process the cyano part and turn the cyanocobalamin into methylcobalamin which is the bio-active form of vitamin B12 that the body can instantly use. Then the vitamin B12 is ready to help in the thousands of processes that help protect the bodies nervous system, increase cognitive abilities, produce DNA, build muscle mass, cell growth, protein and tissue synthesis, turn food into fuel, help produce red blood cells and much more.

Vegan Positives for Vitamin B12 Cyanocobalamin

  • No animal ingredients are used in manufacturing
  • Lower price point than other form
  • Most stable form of vitamin B1
  • Both intramuscular and subcutaneous injections deliver vitamin B12 to the body more efficiently and faster than tablets or liquid. Intramuscular injections deliver usable vitamin B12 faster than subcutaneous injections, yet both injections provide a higher percentage and faster absorption rate than tablets or liquid forms.

Vegan Negatives of Cyanocobalamin

  • It is potentially harmful in large doses if users are smokers or to those with existing high levels of cyanide exposure. Smokers should opt for other forms of vitamin B12 supplements
  • Tablets and sub-lingual liquids often contain fillers and other additives that are not vegan. Be sure to read ingredients lists thoroughly.

Summary

Vitamin B12 cyanocobalamin is vegan friendly, lower priced and the most stable form of vitamin B12. It can be taken orally or by injection and there has been no upper limit of toxicity established, making vitamin B12 a safe vitamin to supplement. It is water soluble and all unneeded vitamins are excreted through urination.

Some people absorb different forms of B12 better than others, which is why anyone can suffer from low B12, meat eaters and vegans can both be vitamin B12 deficient. Individuals with deficiencies must find out which form of vitamin B12 supplement is best for them.

Cyanocobalamin remains very effective for healthy people supplementing their daily requirement or treating vitamin B12 deficiencies and is globally prescribed to treat vitamin B12 deficiencies.

Once your vitamin B12 deficiency is stabilized, injection frequency can often be reduced. Of course, this depends upon the cause of your deficiency such as malabsorption, pernicious anemia and other conditions that create vitamin B12 deficiencies and if the cause has been effectively treated.

Always consult your doctor or healthcare professional when supplementing any vitamin. Tell them all over the counter and prescription medicine you are taking before you implement a supplementation program and then keep them informed of all positive and negative effects.
